Importing Weapons into Mexico: What’s Permitted and What’s Not

Source: istockphoto

We receive quite a few emails from readers asking us about the laws related to the importation of weapons into Mexico. People ask us about importing everything from BB guns to Tasers.

The Mexican government created a useful guide in PDF format that answers these questions and many others:

Guide: Importing Weapons to Mexico (PDF)

Tips on Using the Guide

The guide is only available in Spanish; however, it does have pictures of the items which makes it easy to use even if you don’t speak Spanish.

For those of you who do not speak Spanish, I recommend using a program like Google Translate to translate anything you don’t understand.

The guide breaks down the items into three categories:

  1. Articles that do not require special permission to import or export.
  2. Articles that do require special permission from the Secretaría de Defensa Nacional.
  3. Articles that are prohibited from being imported or exported.

  1. Thanks for your post once again. I looked through the list and was not planning on bringing any guns etc with me. But I have heard a lot of people online saying that you can purchase pepper spray at stores in Mexico. I have a bottle that I bought for a different trip that I took overseas and still have. Do you think that there would be any problem bringing that along in my checked luggage?

    • I wouldn’t bring anything like that because depending on the ingredients, that would be an item that requires special permission to import (category #2).

  2. You are the to go to people for questions on almost any subject. I have found your comments very helpful. Thanks for being there

    OK enough sucking up,

    • Thanks for the compliment on the Spanish courses.

Don’t worry about the guns, they have to leave them in the States. If they want one down here, they have to buy it from the Mexican government at the only gun store in the country. The PDF that is attached, answers the import questions for the people who want to bring pepper spray or a Taser for self defense purposes. You would be amazed at how many people write us to ask about bringing those items.
