Self-isolation wasn’t too bad the first week or so. I binge watched all my favorite shows, ate my favorite foods and took frequent naps. It was pretty sweet at first, but you know what they say about too much of a good thing.
It wasn’t long until I developed a severe case of cabin fever and time itself seemed to slow to a crawl. I needed to find something more mentally stimulating to do other than through funny memes on Facebook.
I had been kicking around the idea of creating a phone app to teach Spanish, so I enrolled in a free online course in mobile app development offered by the Carlos Slim Foundation. It’s one of over 160 free courses on their site, aprende.org.
This isn’t the first time that I’ve taken one of their courses. I took their air conditioner repair course back in 2016 to learn how to perform routine maintenance and minor repairs on the three mini-splits in our condo. The course was excellent in terms of content and presentation.
I even received a certificate of completion.
Just in case any of our readers would find the site useful, here’s some information about it.
Capacítate (Aprende.org)
The courses are only available in Spanish; however, some of the more recent courses do include subtitles in either English or Portuguese. You can learn about everything from computer programming to construction.
This is a great site for those folks who are learning Spanish on their own and would like to improve both their vocabulary and listening comprehension. The Spanish spoken in the videos is very clear.
You can access the videos on their main site (below) or download the app (Aprende.org)

Let’s Wrap This Up
So far, I’m enjoying the course. A couple of hours flew by quickly as I worked my way through several lessons and quizzes.
Now it’s time to take a break from my studies and go back to scrolling through funny memes on Facebook. That should keep me busy until Linda announces it’s happy hour.
Stay safe, everyone!
Great Bored terribly even in PV Gracias
Great suggestion! I’ve been watching your Spanish language videos on Youtube. I highly recommend them for anyone who wants to learn or improve their Spanish.
Thanks, Sally. 🙂
Great info, Will hop over there and give it a try. BTW … I followed your advice and checked out Transferwise. It was just what I have been looking for. Thanks so much for being the Expat Guru.
Glad to hear that it worked out. Have a great day. 🙂

All of the classes are in Spanish, so that was what I was referring to when I said it was a good way to practice the language.
