Why Are There So Many South Dakota Tags in Mexico? (VIDEO)

In this video, I talk about why there are so many cars and RVs with South Dakota license plates in Mexico. I also share how you can get your own set of South Dakota license plates, even if you’ve never set foot in South Dakota.

  1. So, if I understand you correctly, the main reason people would buy SD plates is because they do not require a safety inspection sticker and that they do not expire. Is that correct?

  2. Do you have a video that talks about how to get a US driver’s license if you no longer have an address in the US? We have Mexican licenses, but don’t really want to lose our US licenses when they expire.

    • If you spend 24 hours in South Dakota and get a virtual mailbox there, you can get a license there. Otherwise, you might have to use a relative’s address.

  3. This is what we did when we drove to Mexico in our “RV”/shuttle bus last year. Super easy!!!

  4. Paul,
Thanks for the informative video on obtaining SD plates. When we had our place in Baja Sur, there were a lot of these, and there was RE agent who would help obtain the plates.

A MC riding friend told me that Arizona has a similar, easy way to get the plates. This is another reason for SD plates; if you have a MC that’s off-road only, you can get plates for the bike from SD or AZ, and be able to ride on or off hiway.
